Typhoon Lan in the Western Pacific

This image of Typhoon Lan was taken by the JMA Himawari satellite at 0125 UTC on October 18, 2017. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center states in their Prognostic Reasoning that sea surface temperatures in the region are extremely warm with notably high ocean heat content. Typhoon Lan is forecast to intensify rapidly to super typhoon strength in the next 48 hours.The first unit of the Japan Meteorological Agency's (JMA) third-generation of geostationary satellites, Himawari-8 provides visible light and infrared images of the Asia-Pacific region, and is an important part of the worldwide geostationary constellation.
